The other day, I found a neat little cabinet someone threw out, and posted about it. (here: https://steemit.com/reuse/@dbennett/found-treasure)
Now I'm working on bringing it back to new. I got most of the paint off. I used Citristrip. It's very effective and seems safer than some other methods. Just apply it and wait. I reapply if I see it drying, to be sure it soaks through the layers of paint. Thankfully, this one only had two layers. The bottom layer is ugly!
I never expected to find such nice wood, or that it would be solid. Parts are veneered, but the legs and sides are solid. I love the craftsmanship. But, I can't seem to put a date on it. I think it's anywhere from 1940 to 1970. Stylistically, it's obviously mid-century modern. The mahogany seems more classic, like the forties, but there are plastic parts holding the magnets for the door. Oh and there are magnets holding the door shut. That's modern.
I did discover that the handles (the original one I found inside it, are called "Radcliffe Knobs," so that will be easier to find. (Like this one, but not exactly: https://keep.com/radcliffe-knob/p/9Mr6aRgAqT/) Hopefully I can match the first one.
I'm pretty excited. Can't wait to give it several coats of tung oil to make the wood sing!
