Marriage is one thing that every woman dream of in her life but it is quite difficult for a particular clan in Imo State of Nigeria.
The reason for this is because the parents of the bride sell her to her new husband. This is done in the name of keeping up with the customs and traditions of the land.
It is customary in Nigeria, irrespective of your tribe to pay a certain amount of money that is called dowry or bride price - which I'm sure is applicable in other parts of Africa too.

In Mbaise, the parents of the bride always demand a huge sum from the groom as the bride price and not only that they ask the groom to pay them back almost every dime that has been spent on the girl especially inline with her education.
This practice have chased away a lot of potential suitors from this community. The amounts required to pay are much that men would refuse to marry in time or go to another tribe to marry because they are not capable of paying such huge sums.
Young girls have been heard to protest about this practice by pleading with their parents to reduce the amount that their fiance are meant to pay. The concerns of the young girls may have proven fruitless overtime because it is still the same till date. The men believe they have spent a lot of money in bringing up their children and it is best for the man that wants to marry her to pay some of the money spent on her. They believe a girl child is a good business, a huge investment that would be profitable in the nearest future.
Early this year, a lawmaker representing a constituency in the State House of Assembly sponsored a bill to the reduce the amount paid for marriage in the state to a maximum of #180,000 ($436.86). He emphasized the need for the bill due to young women in the state who are not married yet due to high bride price among other expenses.
