I will provide a quick summary of the first film in order to properly discuss the second one. At the beginning of the first film, we can see how primates come into contact with a strange rectangular black object, a monolith, and quickly after this contact, the same primates will start to develop a level of creativity higher than other primates who didn't have this contact.
This monolith isn't a natural object, it was created by some type of intelligence and it certainly wasn't created by primates. The creators of this monolith are a mystery in a similar way as the creators of the tesseract in Interstellar are also a mystery. The primates will start to develop primitive tools and it is implied that this is how humanity began.
There isn't just 1 monolith though, other monoliths are eventually discovered as we become more and more sophisticated. Each time a new one is discovered/encountered, something unlocks in our minds that allows us to keep moving forward in our evolution.
The first film ends when an astronaut called Dave Bowman comes into contact with the third monolith, which is floating in space around Jupiter. This contact ends up transforming him into something beyond humanity. He no longer is human but rather a higher state of conscience that doesn't even need a body. This will turn him into an important character in the books to come. One can only think, if the monolith can do this, then what is the nature of its creators? The film ends shortly after the contact with this monolith.
I watched the film of the first book several years ago, and just like the book, the film is also considered a classic of the scifi genre and it had one of the best directors of all time, Stanley Kubrick. When I saw the film I didn't know the second book also had its own film produced in later decades. It wasn't until recently when I discovered the second film by just chance. This one isn't as popular as the first one but is still a must-watch in my opinion.

Sin embargo, no hay solo un monolito, otros monolitos se descubren eventualmente a medida que nos volvemos más y más sofisticados. Cada vez que se descubre/encuentra uno nuevo, se desbloquea algo en nuestra mente que nos permite seguir avanzando en nuestra evolución.

Vi la película del primer libro hace varios años, y al igual que el libro, la película también es considerada un clásico del género de ciencia ficción y tuvo uno de los mejores directores de todos los tiempos, Stanley Kubrick. Cuando vi la película, no sabía que el segundo libro también tenía su propia película producida en décadas posteriores. No fue hasta hace poco cuando descubrí la segunda película por casualidad. Este no es tan popular como la primera, pero sigue siendo un must watch en mi opinión.

Main names associated with the film
This film is from the 80 and I am not familiar with actors/actresses of that era. I was only able to recognize one member of the cast who is still acting in important productions even to this day, Helen Mirren. She plays the Soviet official charge of the main spaceship and is therefore, a character that will take several important decisions. In recent times, she has played the main role in the HBO series called Catherine the Great, and in a great film called Woman in Gold. She is always participating in new productions so it is very likely you have seen her at least once or twice in recent years.
The director and writer of the screenplay are the same person, Peter Hyams. I don't think I ever saw something directed or written by him, and since most of his works are around 40 to 50 years old it is difficult to properly ascertain if they were popular at the time o not. Of his previous works, I only recognized the anthology series Amazing Stories where he directed one episode.
I think one of the reasons why this second film wasn't as popular as the first one is that it was created 16 years later, and most people were probably interested in other productions by that time. The second book isn't as popular as the first one so this is also another big factor to take into account, and finally, the popularity of both directors cannot be compared. Nevertheless, I believe this second film deserves to be as popular as the first one for reasons I will explain in the paragraphs below.
What was the movie about?
The events of this film take place 9 years after the first film. The Americans are doing their best in sending a new spaceship to see what happened to the astronauts of the first mission, and the Soviets are doing just the same and for some reason are able to send a spaceship many months before the Americans.
It is decided that the Soviets will carry some Americans in their spaceship to help in trying to recover data from the first American spaceship that is still floating around Jupiter. These people don't know anything about what happened, they just know the mission failed and the astronauts went missing and probably died. They don't know there is a third giant monolith floating around Jupiter.
The rivalry between the Soviets and Americans is an important element of this story. This won't add anything useful to the real scifi plot and just felt like an outdated way of adding drama but we shouldn't forget this story was created many decades ago when the Cold War was a big thing and people were afraid they would just blow each other up and destroy the planet.

Eventually, Bowman, the astronaut who came into contact with the third monolith in the first film and was transformed into a higher state of conscience, makes an important appearance. We will see what he can do now in this newly evolved state and will deliver an important message not only to the crew but also to humans who are on Earth. Shortly after, a massive event will take place in Jupiter that will leave the crew completely speechless.
The film doesn't answer the most important question regarding the origins of the monolith, but this is just based on the second book. There are 2 other books that haven't been adapted to a movie yet and it is in those 2 books where a lot of questions are answered. This film was an excellent continuation of the first one and I think it should be just as popular because it was a decent production all around, and it continues the story in a very satisfactory manner.
How were the performance from the cast and the settings?
Most members of the cast were OK in their roles, there weren't any spectacular performances but it wasn't needed either. The settings were acceptable given the date of this film. Surprisingly, the spaceship had a less futuristic look compared to the spaceship in the first film but I don't think it is fair to measure how techie an old film looks. Most viewers should expect some things to look very outdated, especially the special effects.
Final thoughts
2010: The Year We Make Contact can be almost as enjoyable as the first one. It deserves much more recognition and is a must-watch for those who enjoy this type of film. However, there are still important questions to be answered.
I really wish the remaining 2 books can be one day adapted to the screen either as films or series, but this movie is almost 40 years old and the first one is more than 50 years old, so I suspect there might not be much interested in continue to develop this story. However, there is still hope. Recently, Apple announced it is producing a series based on another classic scifi story known as The Foundation, so if that series is successful, maybe other companies could get interested in checking what other classic scifi story is yet to be produced and they might find the remaining 2 books of this story.
Finalmente, Bowman, el astronauta que entró en contacto con el tercer monolito en la primera película y se transformó en un estado de conciencia superior, hace una aparición importante. Veremos qué puede hacer ahora en este nuevo estado evolutivo y transmite un mensaje importante no solo a la tripulación, sino también a los humanos que están en la Tierra. Poco después, se llevará a cabo un evento masivo en Júpiter que dejará a la tripulación completamente sin palabras.
La película no responde a la pregunta más importante sobre los orígenes de los monolitos, pero esto solo se basa en el segundo libro. Esta película fue una excelente continuación de la primera y creo que debería ser igual de popular porque fue una producción decente y continúa la historia de una manera muy satisfactoria.
¿Cómo fue la actuación del elenco y la ambientación?
La mayoría de los miembros del elenco estaban bien en sus papeles, no hubo actuaciones espectaculares, pero tampoco fue necesario. Los escenarios fueron aceptables dada la fecha de esta película.
