Overheating is very common in old laptops, especially those with a GPU. Laptops don't have the space for massive heatsinks and fans, like you find in desktop PCs. The fans inside most laptops are only good enough to keep things cool if everything is running at optimal conditions.
The first thing is to use a vacuum cleaner to clean out as much dust as possible. You can also buy a laptop stand with extra fans for your desk, highly recommended if you live in a hot place.
WARNING!
- Do this at your own risk and only if you are comfortable with electronics and you know how to ground yourself.
- Direct contact with the CPU and GPU can damage your computer. Even a small amount of static electricity is enough to do permanent damage to a processor.
The fan and the copper heat pipe are connected together, so I removed all the screws and gently lifted the cooling system from the motherboard.
Underneath the copper pipes, you can see how the coolant has dried out.
This is what the CPU and GPU looked like immediately after I removed the cooling system.
I cleaned off the old dry thermal paste.
Try to distribute the new thermal paste as evenly as possible to ensure the whole processor is properly cooled.
I also cleaned off the copper pipes before reattaching them.
