The kids (my doggies) were dying to get out, so I loaded 'em up in the truck and headed up San Sevaine road, on the eastern end of the San Gabriel mountains, for a short hike out to the San Sevaine lookout. This was once the site of an old fire lookout which long has since burned down, leaving only the concrete foundation and some melted glass.
(Some history about the old fire lookout - http://www.hundredpeaks.org/signatures/17h.htm)
The hike starts at a turn out on the dirt road and descends a steep brush covered ridge down to a saddle where you then make the small climb up to the lookout. A little bit of route finding is required to avoid the worst of the brush, but it was only about a mile, and we worked our way through it no problem. Once at the lookout I busted out the DSLR to get some great shots of the Inland Empire (my hometown) and the surrounding mountains. Being on the far eastern end of the San Gabriel range, the San Sevaine lookout has some really great wide open views overlooking the city.
Overlooking my part of town
(see the 2 water tanks at the bottom, I live just to the right of the watertank on the left)
Looking at Keller peak in the San Bernardino mountains
Views looking south from the lookout. Saddleback mountain in the distance.
Views looking east overlooking San Bernardino with the San Jacinto mountains in the distance
Looking down at the 15 freeway running along the base of the mountains as we climbed back up the ridge.
After getting some pictures we relaxed for a bit enjoyed the views and had some snacks. Then we hiked back up the brushy ridge to the dirt road. It was a short hike, but it's always great to get out. And this place is so close to my house that it makes it really easy for doing a last minute hike with the doggies!
