Sigma Kappa house - University of Washington. In 2005 the building achieved landmark status both in the city of Seattle and on the National Historic Register.

My freshman year of college I joined Sigma Kappa Sorority at the University of Washington. Sigma Kappa is a national Greek letter organization with 124 collegiate chapters and 120 alumnae chapters across the United States. The organization was founded November 9th, 1874 by the first female students admitted to Maine’s Colby College.

My Sigma Kappa pledge class was made up of 35 gals from across the country. We spent our college years living together, studying together and getting into all kinds of mischief. Some of my best friends are people I met in the house.

Every November, Sigma Kappa chapters across the country celebrate the formation of the sorority through an event called Founder’s Day. As the name suggests, this day honors the five women who founded the sorority. It is also a chance for collegiate and alumnae members of the organization to bond, share stories and enjoy sisterhood over a lovely meal.

The last time I attended a Founder’s Day event was probably November 1995. However LAST NIGHT, my classmates and I went back for a special celebration. This year marked the 25th anniversary of our initiation.

We ate dinner at the chapter house while enjoying the normal Founder’s Day program. Near the conclusion of the festivities, there was a special presentation where we were each gifted a certificate, flowers and our 25 year pins. After we went on a house tour.
