Despite many therapies that are available today to help those who are suffering from substance abuse, addiction is still difficult to treat and widely prevalent in society. Thousands of people die every year because of drug addictions and overdose. Many who are in need of treatment will also likely never receive it. For those who are open to long-term treatment, there are a myriad of options available to try and tools that might help.
There are conventional methods with different programs available at various rehab facilities and treatment centers and there is also a growing interest for alternative solutions as well with things like cannabis, ibogaine, and kratom.
More specifically, researchers believe that positive psychology exercises could have the potential to boost happiness for those who are going through treatment and recovering from substance abuse.
Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital Recovery Research Institute had participants engage in a myriad of short writing exercises detailing happy moments from their life; they had to relive those happy moments when telling about them.
500 participants had engaged in the online survey as a part of the study and they were assigned to a variety of psychology exercises.
The participants who had reported experiencing the greatest boost in their mood were those who had done the exercise which required them to select a photo of their own and describe what was going on in that photo; give details about a happy time in their life.
