Several months ago it was reported that Kerrygold was being sued over their grass-fed claims. One man in California launched the lawsuit against the company behind Kerrygold, saying that they were being deceptive with their marketing because the milk was coming from cows that might have been consuming soy or corn as a part of their diet, and not just grass.
Recently, a judge decided to agree with the company behind Kerrygold butter, which is Ornua Co-operative Ltd, after they argued that the case shouldn't be heard because the claims against the marketing for the products were wrong.
Ornua is currently the state's largest exporter of dairy products and the group sells and markets dairy products on behalf of the members which are Irish dairy farmers and processors.
Ornua reportedly has plans to eventually build Kerrygold into a billion-dollar dairy brand and they might not be very far off from achieving that goal if they continue to grow as they are. Currently, Kerrygold butter reportedly holds the 2nd spot in the US butter market.
The new campaign marketing grass-fed dairy is supposed to feature three families and will be hoping to highlight the grass-fed system of Irish dairy farming; celebrating their passion and tradition.
A New Competitor
They've already launched their grass-fed natural aged cheddar cheese onto the market (seen above). And now some reports suggest that farmers are afraid that the new alternative could cut into the success off Kerrygold's position which is currently the 2nd spot in the US market.
As far as the lawsuit involving the man from California who was arguing that the grass-fed claims for Kerrygold weren't accurate, the judge in that case gave him time to refile and amendment so there's a chance that the suit could still be revived.
