A group of scientists, engineers, and council-members, have been busy working together to develop the concept of self-repairing cities.
Essentially, what they aim to do is have drone robots help repair infrastructure issues, by examining where there are spots that need attention and then using drone robots to repair the roads at night in order to minimize traffic disruption.
The team includes researchers from several different schools who have been working on the initiative, along with the Leeds city council.
Ultimately, they want to use drone robots to fix roads because there is clearly a need in this area. The government has also claimed that they don't have the funds to repair the roads and there is plenty of work to be done.
It's estimated that it would take at least $9 billion or more to repair the roads in the UK and it would take roughly 14 years to complete the task.
Researchers involved with the self-repairing city concept agree that the public will need to be on-board with the initiative, they'll need to be okay with drones flying around analyzing roadways and deploying solutions to try and fix the problem.
They also know that they are going to need support from authorities and that's why they've been working together to try and bring this concept to life. There are also other jurisdictions that have been pursuing the same goal, looking for various ways that drones might be able to be used in various communities.
As a part of their present objective for self-repairing cities, researchers have been investigating the social and economic impacts of robot road repair and they've allegedly been including policy makers in the process. They've been working on this plan for several years already and they expect that within the next few years that they will begin testing their robots on the streets in the UK, further exploring whether or not their idea of a self-repairing city could become a reality.
But we can already see drones being used around the US and elsewhere. Drones are being used to help clean up after car crashes by assisting teams when they need to gather data about a certain accident before the roadway can be cleared. The drones are able to do this much faster than traditional methods and we might soon start to see drones and robots being used much more frequently worldwide to help with cleaning-up roads, repairing them in the night, and much more.
