This year's Free Comic Book Day was also used to showcase Marvel Voices. While the series has already been in print before this day, this free one-shot took an opportunity to celebrate the many diverse artist and writers, as well as superheroes, within their universe. The issue begins with a reprinted introduction by Angélique Roché. Beginning as a podcast, Marvel's Voices intention was to spotlight creative members of the Marvel Universe of color. Included in this issue is also a celebration of Marvel's LGBTQ+'s history.
The celebration is done creatively utilizing Uatu, the Watcher. After all, his sole purpose is to observe and record all of the significant moments that involve our heroes. As has been well-documented, Uatu is not permitted to interfere in the outcome of events. He speaks of many indigenous heroes that include Black Crow, Warpath, Portal, Forge, Puma, Silver Fox, Risque, Echo, Talisman, Mirage, American Eagle, Snowbird, Shaman, Thunderbird, Red Wolf and Wingfoot. Keep in mind that sometimes our heroes end up on the wrong side of the law.
Prodigy gives the reader a look at the LGBTQ side of Marvel by giving mention to Northstar, Sera, Wiccan, Hulkling, Union Jack, Destroyer, Mystique and Destiny. Captain America is known to have supported a friend from his childhood, Arnie Roth. The Young Avengers is known for its mostly queer contingent. It was very common for people to keep their sexual orientation hidden in the early days of Marvel, so there could be a bit of mystery surrounding some of the older heroes, as well.
Moon Girl, Devil Dinosaur, Bishop, Snake and The Shark also make appearances among others within a series of shorts. Lending their talents to this issue are Nadia Shammas, Luciano Vecchio, Evan Narcisse, Jahnoy Lindsay, Emilio Lopez, Jeffrey Veregge, John Ridley, Olivier Coipel, Laura Martin, Alyssa Wong, Whilce Portacio, Jay David Ramos and Leonardo Romero. While it is just a small taste of these talented people, it does show the reader that there is a hero for everyone!
