As I mentioned in one of my previous posts that I love seafood i want to talk this time a little bit more about OYSTERS.
Oysters which are shellfish have always been a delicacy. During the roman empire, they were used as well as an aphrodisiac. The Romans have been as well the first once which successfully breed them as there was a growing demand for them throughout the Roman empire.
After the Roman empire, the knowledge about how oysters are grown and cultivated nearly got lost. During the 19th century, the demand for oysters did grow again. As the demand was growing, as well the waters Oysters like had been polluted more and more so oysters stocks quickly vanished. Natural oysters nearly died out and so it was decided to restart growing and breeding them again. Nowadays nearly most of the oysters which are landing on our dinner tables are farmed once.
It is possible to split oysters into two species, there is the one for the pearls and then there is the one for the flesh and for consumption.
Despite the purpose, they are farmed in an oyster garden near rocks and flat waters. Most important to grow oysters is the water, it must be fresh and should not be polluted. Oysters are filtering around 200 Liter of water a day.
In Europe oysters grow in France, Holland, Belgium, Danmark, England and Irelande
What makes oysters special is that they are eaten more or less alive. They more or less finally die in your stomach from the stomach acid. The best way to enjoy oysters is with a little bit of lemon, as the lemon puts the oyster into shock. Do not worry, oysters do not have any pain when they are eaten.
