Batman Begins represents arguably the most successful reboot in the history of modern Hollywood and the triumphal arrival of Christopher Nolan among the ranks of most respected contemporary filmmakers. New film adaptation of Batman comic books was radical departure from the earlier film series. Script by David S. Goyer abandoned the focus on popular archvillains and concentrated solely on the character of Batman, played by Christian Bale, and its origin story. The film features some very different versions of Batman and displays evolution of his character from tragically orphaned child into the formidable vigilante. Bale is aided by respectable cast that includes Michael Caine as very convincing Alfred Pennyworth and Gary Oldman in one of rare non-villainous roles as future Commissioner Gordon. Nolan introduces new style with an emphasis on realism, and his Gotham City represents an impressive portayal of a place which is embodiment of modern technology and crime-infested cesspoool at the same time. Powerful music score by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard represents another powerful ingredient in the mix. Although some subplots, namely romance between Batman and Rachel Dawes (played by Katie Holmes), don't work, Batman Begins still justifies his and his director's stellar reputation.
