This is the outline of the state of Maryland, and the state flag within the borders. MD is known for it's flag, and often considered the best looking of the state flags.
The flag has an interesting story that goes all the way back the US Civil War. The flag represents that MD was split Confederate & Union.
Maryland shared a border with the US capital of Washington DC which was formerly Rome, Maryland before becoming the District of Colombia long before the Civil War. The rest of the border was Virginia(and today West-Virginia as well).
MD was the southern-most Union state in the war, and is below the Mason-Dixon line which technically makes it a "Southern" state.
But the war was divisive for the people & politics of MD.
Much of MD wanted to secede and join the Confederacy, but Abraham Lincoln suspended voting and Constitutional rights of Habeas Corpus to prevent the voting that would make this happen.
The reason being because DC would be literally surrounded by enemy territory.
What's left out of history is the fact that Baltimore was where the first shots in the war were fired.
The Union army was travelling south by train, and the line ended in Baltimore where they'd have to march through the city to board the next train.
On the streets the locals of Baltimore started to throw bricks at the Union army as they marched which resulted in them opening fire, and the civilians returning fire.
But the state was divided during the war with secessionists attempting to fight for the Confederacy.
The top left & bottom right quarters of yellow/black are the Union side of MD's flag during the war, and red/white cross sections top-right/bottom-left are the Confederate MD flag.
