Deep into the countryside,
Flew the children’s little kites.
To the left, was a hill so high,
Forever lay the fish ponds nearby.
I wished to climb the banyan tree,
And faraway, I would be able to see
The villagers’ houses – so small,
Surrounded by the coconut trees – so tall.
And the grassy lands, where the cattle grazed,
In the ploughed fields, grew the golden maize.
With my cousins, I used to play so much,
And our puppy’s tail, we used to touch.
Into Uncle’s tea garden, we used to go,
Where we used to pluck oranges sour.
In the evening, we used to pray
To God for granting us a wonderful day,
Before bed, we used to sit near Granny,
And she used to tell us wonderful stories,
Then safe and sound, I used to sleep,
Near Granny so sweet.
This is how I used to spend my wonderful days
At Granny’s place.
