It is still summer in the Philippines. Temperature at noon usually is at an average of 38 degrees. To stay cool, you either take a cold bath , stay in an airconditioned room or...beat the heat with a glass of Maiz con Hielo. Maiz means corn and Hielo is ice so its just a simple glass of ice & corn and its so easy to prepare.
If you find it hard to look for real corn in the market, easiest is to buy a can of sweet corn which is at around 40 pesos/can
Put 2-3 spoon fulls of corn in a glass and add a teaspoon of white sugar depending on how sweet you want it to be
Then get an ice and your old reliable ice shaver that your grandma used before. You can buy one in the palengke, or supermarkets. And let your arm exercise begin by moving the ice shaver back & forth until you fill the entire ice shaver.
Make sure you put a cloth under the ice so that you wont slip the ice and also to catch the water when the ice starts to melt. Once the ice shaver is filled up, you are ready to put it in the glass with corn & sugar.
Then get an evaporated milk and pour some in the ice.
This is already done but if you want to make it more special, you can put leche flan and ube on top.
Make one for each member of the family or you can ask your daughter to prepare one for her brother who will prepare one for his father who will prepare one for the mother. You can even start a contest of whoever finishes the maiz con hielo first gets to make another one while the loser, gets to wash the glasses.
Dont let the summer heat beat you... beat it ! With so many simple things like maiz con hielo, the heat doesnt bother me anyway !
