Theme: What's your plan for an emergency fund??
Life is not a straight line, it comes with a lot of twists and turns, it is unpredictable, very much so and because unexpected events do happen from time to time, it is expedient for us to be properly prepared for emergencies as this will help us deal with them faster.
Emergency fund comes in as a necessity and a recommendation for everyone.
As the name suggests, an emergency fund refers to money set aside to cover expenses that may arise unexpectedly, unplanned events like loosing a job or the need for an urgent medical treatment and should only be used in an actual emergency.
It helps to insulate oneself when things go sour. It’s just like having a fire extinguisher, while no one prays for a fire outbreak, it does no harm to have one handy as a means of dealing with it immediately and minimizing the damage, if it ever occurs.
I understand financial terms a little to know the importance of emergency fund as what will help one reduce financial distress while navigating through very challenging situations.
But as much as I understand most of these things, my hands are seriously tied as a result of the realities, I mean very harsh economic realities in my country, I have found myself living from hand to mouth, the gross devaluation of the Naira, which is my currency, would make a mess of any savings you would even want to put aside. In the banks, money saved is being turned into rubble, devalued beyond control. With low income levels and a volatile economy as mine, it does make it practically impossible to stash money away in an emergency fund.
I have lived a frugal life for the greater part of my life, I practice minimalism on a daily basis, all in a bid to meet up with the daily needs of my family.
Seeing this prompt has once again highlighted how crucial and important it is to have an emergency fund to fall back on in times of economic uncertainty. It is a habit I need to cultivate anyway because it would give me financial security and peace of mind.
