Theme: How safe is your country?
My country Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with over 200 ethnic groups and 500 different languages. It is situated in the warm tropical region and is blessed with vast human and mineral resources, diversely rich in cultural heritage, art, film, fashion and cuisine. Tourism thrived because of the beautiful coastlines, beaches, natural warm springs and waterfalls, rocks and caves. So many magnificent places for the tourist's pleasure.
In terms of human resources, Nigeria sits as a country with some of the most brilliant men and women in different fields of human endeavours. Nigeria's charm lies in the breathtaking scenery and the complex fabric of cultures, traditions, and histories interwoven, to produce the Nigerian identity.
A beautiful maiden, ardently sought after, and proudly African, was my country, a country with the potential for astronomical growth and development...but... How did Nigeria as a beautiful and blessed country become this ugly?
The Nigerian problem is summed up in the words of Chinua Achebe;
"Nigeria is what it is because its leaders are not what they should be."
It is a very grim image of Nigeria that is painted across the borders and that's because it's unfortunately the truth.
Nowhere is safe in the real sense of it. What is worrisome about the Nigerian situation is that there's usually little or no help when sh#t happens, people getting away with violent crimes against humanity, terrorist attacks and kidnappings in different parts of the country, by Boko Haram and the Fulani herdsmen. Farmlands, places of worship and road or rail transporters are their main target areas.
Generally, the Northern part is not safe neither the Eastern area. Bandits now roam the farmlands, killing, raping and maiming, unabated.
Nigeria is very unsafe at the moment and except something is done and done fast, we won't have a country left at the end. The war is raging within!
It will take only good and people-oriented leadership to set things right and redeem the severely battered image of this country. And why not? Do we have any other country to run to, apart from this one? I don't!
