When it comes to a technology like Bitcoin it's no surprise that it generates a lot of buzz and yet most people exposed to it have no idea how to use it. The best way to help a newcomer learn the ropes is by having them install a wallet on their phone and sending them a small amount of bitcoin.
Seeing bitcoin in action rather than just trying to explain it is a much more efficient way to teach new users. After witnessing a transaction themselves and being a part of the network then you can explain the functionality. Explaining how it's peer to peer and decentralized and how that benefits them from current money systems comes next.
The goal is for the person you're showing how bitcoin works to be involved and aware of the advantages it has over their plastic/paper money.
Best of luck and thanks for reading.
