There are games on the Ethereum blockchain, where every action costs money. They can get quite expensive so it's pretty smart to rather not play them at all.
Then there are games on HIVE. HIVE is a feeless blockchain so actions are free and thus it's a very wise move to start playing those. The games here are pretty sophisticated, but they don't offer much action. They are ultimately play-to-earn, which is a good thing, but you can't really play them without a small starting investment. In Splinterlands for example you need at least the basic deck, in dCITY you can't start earning if you don't have any cards and so on.
Then there is something even more interesting that I found out just recently. It doesn't need a starting investment, it's an old skill game, you can play in your browser and you can earn some small amounts of Nano too! Nano is another great feeless and fast blockchain.
So what's the interesting thing?
Quake3!
QuakeJS is a port of ioquake3 to JavaScript with the help of Emscripten. This project started to demonstrate the feasibility of browser-based gaming, and what better way than with a classic game whose core gameplay revolves around the kind of responsive APIs that are available with HTML5 today.

It's really easy to start too.
- Go to https://nanoquakejs.com
- Choose an username and enter your NANO address to start playing. You can grab a NANO wallet from Nault.cc
- Hit the Go button and start the game! For each kill in the game you will get some NANO rewards straight to your wallet at the end of every match.
Pretty amazing community project in my opinion. It looks like currently nobody is playing, but when I tried there were 8 people and it was a lot of fun.
Good luck!
