Marat Taturas is an experimental electronic music producer from Russia, someone who’s at home in many musical environments. He’s behind a couple of record labels (Aera Records and Afraid Records), and has written music for movies, television and the theatre, as well as remixing artists such as Giorgio Moroder, Donna Summer, and Limahl.
Here’s a great track released a few months ago called Karabay. Some of the sounds are sourced from vintage sound recordings from the Kazan Museum archives, but then supplemented with contemporary electronic production. Michiel Hollanders then provided mandolin and claudeviol, with Gennady Lavrentiev on the tabla. (Maybe someone can enlighten me as to what a claudeviol is?).
Apparently Karabay is an old Tatar folk melody originating around the beginning of the 20th Century. Here’s it’s given a great electronic vibe, with real instruments adding some natural groove. Enjoy…
