Hello friends of Hive and beautiful Petals community, in the first post I make here I am going to expose you what I was able to investigate about a plant that has always caught my attention. As rare and pretty as it is, how easy it is to maintain and reproduce is not esteemed enough. It is practically born and grows alone, where it wants, and we only realize its presence by the beautiful contrast that its flowers make with the green that surrounds it.
Hola amigos de Hive y hermosa comunidad de Petals, en la primera publicación que hago aquí voy a exponerles lo que pude investigar sobre una planta que siempre me ha llamado la atención. A pesar de lo rara y bonita que es, lo fácil de mantener y de reproducir no es lo suficientemente estimada. Prácticamente nace y crece sola, dónde ella quiere, y solo nos damos cuenta de su presencia por el bello contraste que hacen sus flores con el verdor que la rodea.
Jatropha podagrica is a succulent plant native to the tropical Americas. It is grown as an ornamental plant in many parts of the world due to its unusual appearance. Names by which it is popularly known include Gout Plant, Gout Stalk, Guatemalan Rhubarb, Coral Plant, Buddha Belly Plant, Purging-Nut, Physic Nut, Goutystalk Nettlespurge, Australian Bottle Plant, and Tartogo. It is perennial and grows up to 1 meter in height. The stem is gray-green, knobby and swollen, giving it a bottle-like appearance, which gives rise to some of its common names.
It blooms for most of the year. The fruits are green capsules at first, turning blackish brown at maturity, when they explode and disperse their seeds.
Jatropha podágrica es una planta suculenta nativa de las Américas tropicales. Se cultiva como planta ornamental en muchas partes del mundo debido a su aspecto poco común. Los nombres por los que se la conoce popularmente incluyen Gout Plant, Gout Stalk, Guatemalan Rhubarb, Coral Plant, Buddha Belly Plant, Purging-Nut, Physic Nut, Goutystalk Nettlespurge, Australian Bottle Plant y Tartogo. Es perenne y crece hasta 1 metro de altura. El tallo es gris-verde, nudoso e hinchado, dandole una apariencia similar a una botella, lo que da lugar a algunos de sus nombres comunes.
Florece durante la mayor parte del año. Los frutos son cápsulas verdes al principio, volviéndose de color marrón negruzco en la madurez, cuando explotan y dispersan sus semillas.
When cut, the plant exudes a copious sticky sap that can cause contact dermatitis.
Culture
The swollen caudex, showy leaves, and colorful flowers make J. podagrica an attractive ornamental, and it is grown as a houseplant in many parts of the world.

Folk medicine attributes analgesic, tonic, aphrodisiac, purgative, laxative properties to it, and it has been used to treat infections, intestinal worms, snakebite, gout, and more. Other uses include tanning, dye making, soap making, biofuel, fish poison, lamp lighting, and fertilizers.
La medicina popular le atribuye propiedades analgésicas, tónicas, afrodisíacas, purgantes, laxantes, y ha sido usada para tratar infecciones, gusanos intestinales, mordedura de serpiente, gota, y más. Otros usos incluyen bronceado, fabricación de tintes, fabricación de jabón, biocombustible, veneno para peces, iluminación de lámparas y fertilizantes.
Toxicity
All parts of the plant are considered toxic, particularly the seeds. The main toxins are a purgative oil and a phytotoxin or toxalbumin (curcin) similar to ricin.
