Spathoglottis plicata

Sometimes we see some plants on a daily basis and we don't realize their beauty in enough detail. They seem common to us and we take it for granted that they will continue to show their leaves and flowers, regardless of whether we are interested in getting to know them better and pay enough attention to them.
Today I want to talk to you about a flowering plant that we have had at home for quite some time, the Spathoglottis plicata.

A veces, vemos algunas plantas cotidianamente y no nos damos cuenta de su belleza con suficiente detalle. Ellas nos parecen comunes y damos por sentado que van a seguir mostrando sus hojas y flores, independientemente de que nos interesemos en conocerlas mejor y les prestemos suficiente atención.
Hoy quiero hablarles de una planta con flores que hace bastante tiempo tenemos en casa, la Spathoglottis plicata.

Native to the Asian continent, they are classified among the orchids. They are not aerial but terrestrial herbs and have become very well naturalized in our tropics and other parts of the world.
It reproduces by pseudobulbs and seeds. From each one comes a plant with about 4 leaves and up to 40 flowers that are born from long hairy stems and twist about 180 degrees as they open (resupination)
Its name means pleated tongue, due to the shape of its Labelllum and the fact that its long leaves are pleated. It is also called Philippine Ground Orchid and Giant Purple Orchid.

Nativas del continente asiático, están clasificadas entre las orquídeas. No son aéreas sino hierbas terrestres y se han naturalizado muy bien en nuestro trópico y otras partes del mundo.
Se reproduce por pseudobulbos y semillas. De cada uno sale una planta con unas 4 hojas y hasta 40 flores que nacen de largos tallos peludos y se tuercen unos 180 grados a medida que se abren (resupinación)
Su nombre significa lengua plisada, debido a la forma de su Labelllum y al hecho de que sus largas hojas son plisadas. También es llamada Orquídea terrestre filipina y Orquídea morada gigante.

The ones I show you are typical. They are purple in color and change to bluish tones as the afternoon falls and the intensity of sunlight varies. There are also pink, yellow and white varieties, some of them the product of hybridization of highland species with others from lower lands.

Las que les muestro son las típicas. Son de color morado y cambian a tonalidades azuladas al caer la tarde y variar la intensidad de la luz solar. También existen variedades rosadas, amarillas y blancas, algunas de ellas producto de hibridación de especies de tierras altas con otras de tierras más bajas.

The fruit is an elongated capsule that contains many seeds and that, when dry and open, spread with the wind.

El fruto es una cápsula alargada que contiene muchas semillas y que, al secarse y abrirse, se diseminan con el viento.

In 1999 this plant was included in a list of threatened species (Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Law of 1999) and in 2010 it was excluded again.
Spathogloottis plicata is distributed in southern India, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, New Guinea, Vietnam, Tonga, Samoa, Japan, and parts of Australia.
Likes humid and seasonally flooded places, close to sunny regions with swamps and small streams.
To develop well, Spathoglottis plicatta needs well-drained, aerated soils, and to have the pseudobulb a little outside and above the level of the substrate.

En 1999 esta planta estuvo incluida en una lista de especies amenazadas (Ley de Protección del Medio Ambiente y Conservación de la Biodiversidad de 1999) y en el 2010 fue nuevamente excluida.
Spathoglottis plicata se distribuye al sur de la India, Taiwan, Filipinas, Indonesia, Singapur, Sri lanka, Malasia, Nueva Guinea, Vietnam, Tonga, Samoa, Japón y parte de Australia.
Gusta de lugares húmedos e inundados estacionalmente, cercanías a regiones soleadas con pantanos y pequeños arroyos.
Para desarrollarse bien Spathoglottis plicata necesita de suelos bien drenados, aireados, y tener el pseudobulbo un poco por fuera y sobre el nivel del sustrato.
