It now looks like the entire media is being paid to talk about climate change, but in reality, nobody is paying anyone, they are just spewing the fact about what is happening to our home. It is no doubt that with the rapid change in climate is becoming a concern and this isn't just a normal occurrence seeing that the emissions on a daily is increasing in most parts of the world.
It looks like a lot of major leaders aren't concerned, most times their meetings look like preplanned ones to just tell us what we want to hear, seeing that fossil fuel industries are still actively working and are working on a large scale (it is not like we do not have alternatives now). For them, this is a race of short-term profit and personal gain, not considering the earth.
You see, climate change's biggest threat is that it would be the beginning of the end for human civilization or even our race and that it is unavoidable as at current, but is this true? As of June 2023, the global average temperature is 1.47 ± 0.09 °C compared to the preindustrial era and the most ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement was 1.5 degrees, which is exactly where we are now.,
With this current situation, hot places are getting hotter, and the weather is becoming extreme and it is still increasing. If the warming is at this level and weather conditions are extreme, then what would it be at 2 degrees warming. It would become very extreme with our ecosystem under pressure, fighting to survive. At 3 degree Celsius, a significant part of the earth would not be able to cultivate and feed its people, and heat waves would become a thing of concern. It is believed that if we hit 4 degrees and upwards, then we should expect doom. At this point, it is expected to affect our existence,
If we continue at the rate of emission and climate destruction, by the year 2100, we would experience a global warming of 3 degrees Celsius. Then, we cannot deny the fact that humanity has done a lot in the last decades than the intended doom, and it looks like we are starting to mitigate the impending doom. Greenhouse gas emissions soared 31.1 percent between 2000 and 2010, and this was higher than in the previous decade. But in the last decade, countries like India that use coal as a fossil fuel in the past have slowed down on its usage even though it accounts for 55% of the country's energy, but in countries like China, it is leveling up. While in countries like the UK, and the US, it is going down drastically. Countries are canceling coal plants since 2015, and that is a big plus for us when it comes to fighting global warming and climate change. , , ,
In the past, we thought that innovations like EV cars, and other green energy technologies were too expensive, but in recent times, they are becoming cheap that they are a better option than those fossil fuel-burning technologies of the past. We have also developed ways of reducing the amount of carbon emission where carbon is removed from the atmosphere using carbon capture. These innovations would lead to an increase in carbon removal from the atmosphere and they would be improved to make them cheaper and easily accessible. So can we say we are still at risk of a climate apocalypse?, ,,
Arguments have been changing when it comes to climate change, from It wasn't real, to it wasn't caused by humans although it is real, then while it may be caused by humans, it isn't a bad thing, to it not being avoidable. The world that we are in would need to work on innovation, technology, and science, while working on our mode of consumption as well including the use of disposable bags, and other things that could affect our earth. Hopefully, the Net Zero goal is one thing that would be taken seriously and worked towards to ensure that we do not continue to experience these types of weather conditions that are destructive.
The narrative around climate change has evolved over time unlike in the past when some denied it outrightly in the past, now, they have recognized its reality, and collective actions are being taken to protect our home. This isn't a problem we can ignore or pass off as unavoidable because it's a crisis that demands proactive solutions for a better world. Farmers in my country wailed last year that the climate condition wasn't good enough and flood took over their farms leading to expensive food in the country, it looks like this year is even worse. While the world is embracing solutions to climate change, Africa should not be left behind. We can do a lot and save our world from impending doom.
