A Look at Orioles Pitchers’ Vertical Movement on Pitches
Now onto the News, Rumors, and Commentary…
“The Orioles announced that Thomas Eshelman has cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Triple-A. The righty was designated for assignment on Sunday. In 21 1/3 innings this year, he’s struggled mightily, with an ERA of 8.02, along with strikeout and walk rates of 6.9% and 9.8%. Elsewhere in the AL East… Matt Barnes was…”
“Martin is 26, and the Orioles need to determine if he warrants a spot on the 40-man roster after this season. It remains to be seen whether Baltimore would play Martin in the outfield. Baltimore selected Martin with the first pick of the 2018 Rule 5 draft. With his health and a future roster spot never guaranteed, the time is now for Martin.”
“Richie Martin got back on a major league field for the first time since 2019, which is awesome. Why would he go anywhere else? There are not many clubs with such few big league pitching options, so there is always a chance that Eshelman gets another shot at some innings in Baltimore. The Rookie of the Year is going to be out of reach, but he has shown a lot of moxie to bounce back from a couple of poor stretches to become the kind of force in this lineup that was expected. The lefty spent seven of his 19 career MLB games with the 2007 O’s.”
“In the fourth inning of Tuesday’s game against the Yankees, a harmless fly ball landed between Cedric Mullins and Anthony Santander in right-center field. Joey Gallo struck out for the first out of the inning, but Sanchez then roped a double to left to score Judge and Torres had a sacrifice fly to score Stanton and round out the five-run inning. The Orioles had a few mini threats against him with the hole already dug; Anthony Santander and Austin Hays singled with two outs in the fourth, only for D.J. The Yankees managed to score four more runs in the eighth on a two-run double by Tyler Wade, an RBI groundout from Rizzo and a home run from Judge, but the had already been decided then and there, especially since the Orioles had very little success against a pitcher who was seemingly ripe for a bad night.”
““I didn’t throw enough quality strikes,” Wells said. I didn’t think we took our best tonight.” Akin logged three innings of one-hit ball in long relief in his crispest outing since June 4, as the former prospect looks to salvage what’s been something of a lost year. He’s got a good fastball. Previously, Akin claimed it from Dean Kremer, then Wells took over for Akin.”
““Our roles in the bullpen are all over the place, and it will be nice to have Tyler pitch in big spots later in the game.” Speaking of roles The Orioles are looking at Richie Martin as primarily an infielder in the short term, after he sustained a left wrist fracture in mid-May while playing center field for Triple-A Norfolk. It feels good to be back,” Martin said on Tuesday. Martin can also play third and possibly the outfield in a pinch, though that probably won’t be necessary with the Orioles carrying five outfielders (six, if you count Ryan Mountcastle). From the trainer’s room The Orioles are nearly ready to activate reliever Tyler Wells from the injured list, planning to do so either Wednesday or after Thursday’s off-day, manager Brandon Hyde said.”
“Gameday » July 31: Hitless in tight game Adley Rutschman went 0-for-4 for Double-A Bowie on Saturday, as the Baysox squeaked out a 2-1 win over Richmond. Gameday » July 29: Hitless in win Adley Rutschman probably wishes he had another day game on Thursday, as the 23-year-old catcher went 0-for-5 under the stars for Double-A Bowie. Gameday » July 27: Scores twice and reaches three times in win It was déjà vu for Adley Rutschman on Tuesday, as the No. Gameday » July 30: Goes 1-for-3 in win Adley Rutschman singled and scored in Double-A Bowie’s win over Richmond on Friday.”
