I actually think that their season is almost all year round with some late fall break when most thing is simply dry as a pepper.
Of course now in spring they bloom the most profusely turning roadsides and fields into a spiky, purple carpet.

Galactites tomentosa is also called Purple milk thistle and belong to aster family. It is native to Mediterranean region and... wait for it.. it is edible! That is what I read anyway.

In winter when it is not in bloom and when other plants are also resting you can see their gorgeous and dangerous looking variegated with huge thorns leaves spreading low on the soil level.
Of course I am missing a photo, because when I see a pretty flower I forget to shoot the rest of it ;)
