Smerinthus ocellata (Linnaeus, 1758)
Das Abendpfauenauge ist ein Nachtfalter aus der Familie der Schwärmer (Sphingidae). Mit einer Flügelspannweite von bis zu 80 mm zählt dieser imposante Schmetterling zu den größten Nachtfaltern in Mitteleuropa. Der nachtaktive Falter ruht tagsüber meistens an Baumstämmen oder Ästen. Durch die farbliche Übereinstimmung zu seinem Ansitz und die Zeichnung der Vorderflügel, ist er nur schwer an seinem Ruheplatz zu erkennen. Bei Gefahr breitet er ruckartig die Flügel aus und die Augen der hinteren Flügel kommen zum Vorschein. Die Signalfarben und die Augen der Hinterflügel sollen Fressfeinde abschrecken. So hat jeder Schmetterling seine ganz besondere Strategie um in der Natur zu überleben.
The eyed hawk-moth is a moth of the Sphingidae family. With a wingspan of up to 80 mm, this impressive moth is one of the largest moths in Central Europe. The nocturnal moths usually rest on tree trunks or branches during the day. Due to the color match to his hide and the drawing of the fore wings, it is difficult to recognize him at his resting place. With danger, it spreads the wings jerkily and the eyes of the rear wings come to the foreground. The signal colors and the eyes of the hind wings are supposed to deter eating fines. Each moth has its own special strategy to survive in nature.

Diesen fantastischen Schwärmer habe ich noch nie zuvor fotografiert. Mein Freund Helmut hatte ihn entdeckt und mir diese Aufnahmen ermöglicht. Die Suche nach der Raupe an Weiden, steht bei mir dieses Jahr fest auf dem Programm. Ich habe schon eine geeignete Stelle mit kleinem Bachlauf und relativ feuchtem Umfeld ausgesucht. Dort stehen zahlreiche Korbweiden. Die Blätter sollen bevorzugt auf dem Speiseplan der Schwärmer-Raupe stehen. Wenn es mir gelingt, werde ich sicher noch einmal von dieser Schönheit der Nacht berichten.
I have never photographed this fantastic hawk-moth before. My friend Helmut discovered him and made it possible for me to take these pictures. The search for the caterpillar on pastures is on my agenda this year. I have already chosen a suitable spot with a small stream and a relatively humid environment. There are numerous wicker willows. The leaves should preferably be on the menu of the hawk-moth caterpillar. If I succeed, I will surely report again about this beauty of the night.
