Schwammspinner ■ Gypsy moth
Lymantria dispar (Linnaeus, 1758)
Unsere heutige Tour führte uns durch den Steigerwald. Die erhofften Raritäten an Schmetterlingen, waren leider noch nicht unterwegs. Extrem aufgefallen ist uns der massive Befall von Schwammspinner in nahezu jedem Lebensraum. Ganze Bäume und Sträucher waren kahl gefressen. Auf dem Weg waren überall Raupen zu finden. Diese seilten sich selbst aus den höchsten Bäumen ab und als ich meinen Hut abnahm, konnte ich gleich drei Raupen finden. Ich muss gestehen, dass ich so etwas bisher noch nie gesehen habe. Eigentlich ist die Raupe eine echte Schönheit. In dieser Anzahl allerdings auch sehr bedenklich.
Today's tour took us through the Steigerwald. The hoped for rarities at butterflies were unfortunately not yet on the way. We noticed the massive infestation of gypsy moth in almost every habitat. Whole trees and bushes were eaten bare. On the way caterpillars could be found everywhere. They roped themselves down from the highest trees and when I took off my hat I could find three caterpillars. I must confess that I have never seen anything like this before. Actually the caterpillar is a real beauty. In this number, however, also very precarious.
