We are living in a time where technological advancement is on the increase and the use of robots is becoming a new way of human life. It would interest you to know that some robots can talk, assit with various tasks and even act as a companion. Simply because of these reasons so many people today wonder whether having a robot as a friend is a good idea. Having robot as a friend could give some benefits but the challenge I would have is what about emotions, responsibility? Can robot become emotional and understand the state of human heart?
The benefit of having a robot as a friend could be because of convenience. Many tasks today are done by robot. People that are lonely or physically challenged may need robot. You could program it in a such a way that it would serve as an alarm, reminder, or provide company when no one is available. They can be available at any time and may help reduce stress or isolation. In schools and workplaces, intelligent robots can also support learning and productivity. Robot doesn't get tired or angry or tired.
Having or maintaining a friendship goes beyond just having a machine that assists you. In every friendship or relationship there is feeling, emotions, empathy and understanding. Robot can only do what has been inputed in it. Robot can not love, show joy etc. This pauses a big question can something without emotions be regarded as a friend or companion?
Human friend may refuse to do something dangerous because of the ability to reasoning or emotional understanding, but a robot may simply obey the command it receives. This tells how that dependence on robots can become risky if there is a malfunction, hacking, or misuse of artificial intelligence. If a robot friend receives a dangerous command it will result to negative experiences because robots function under the kind of command and data that is inserted in them. Human relationships could be weaken because of dependence on robot. Many people will start to avoid real human interactions because robots seems to simplify things. Hmmmm can the robot forgive? Can it think? Can it teach patience? Robot is just a machine.
Robot companionship might be important in certain circumstances but it can't replace the genuine love, care conscience that one received.
