Happy last day in the month of April to everyone that believes in this precious community.
A lot of contemplation went on in my heart when I saw the theme for this edition. At a point, I almost gave up because I felt I would not be able to write anything meaningful, since it is not the kind of topic that gives me a free flow of ideas. Nevertheless, I appreciate the entire management for their efforts in keeping this platform active and engaging.
The theme is centered on the issue of self-driving cars. Hmm… the world is truly changing and evolving into something entirely different. We must, however, appreciate God for technological advancement, which has brought a great leap forward for individuals and society at large. Before I proceed to share my thoughts, I would like to explain what a self-driving car is.
A self-driving car, also known as an autonomous vehicle, is a type of car that can move from one place to another without a human driver. In this case, a human being does not control the steering, brakes, or acceleration. Instead, the car operates using a combination of sensors, cameras, and software systems that help it understand the environment and make decisions. These vehicles are also designed to detect objects on the road, such as other cars, pedestrians, and traffic signs.
In my opinion, self-driving cars are a good development, especially because of their safety potential. A large percentage of road accidents today are caused by human error. For example, overspeeding, distraction, or even fatigue can lead to serious accidents. There are times when a driver is tired and is expected to rest, but instead insists on continuing the journey. In such situations, accidents are more likely to occur. I recall an experience when I boarded a vehicle from my residence to the state capital. Along the way, the driver began losing control, and it became obvious that he needed rest. Incidents like this show that many accidents can actually be prevented if human weaknesses are removed from driving. With self-driving cars, such risks can be greatly reduced because the system does not get tired or lose concentration.
Another important benefit is that self-driving cars can help physically challenged individuals. People who are blind, crippled, or unable to drive due to certain conditions would gain more independence. They would no longer need to rely heavily on others for movement, which can improve their quality of life and confidence.
However, despite these advantages, self-driving cars also have some disadvantages. One major concern is cybersecurity. Since these vehicles depend heavily on software and digital systems, there is a risk of hacking or cybercrime. If such systems are compromised, it could lead to dangerous situations. Another issue is job loss. Many people earn their living through driving—such as taxi drivers, bus drivers, and truck drivers. The introduction of autonomous vehicles could reduce the need for human drivers, leading to unemployment for many.
In Nigeria, achieving this might be difficult but is a realm of possibility sha.
In conclusion, self-driving cars represent a major step forward in transportation. They offer improved safety, convenience, and efficiency, but they also come with certain risks that cannot be ignored. Therefore, society must ensure proper regulation, testing, and awareness so that this technology can be used responsibly and for the benefit of all.
