The many torments of Tiny Earl - Chapter 23 (part two)
Clare nodded, and Glenn said, "I need to call the shop, I need to get some advice on how to manage his current behaviour. And I also need to talk to them about what happened to me, last night." Glenn waited for Clare to nod again, and then he left her. He walked outside and pulled the communication device out of his pocket and called the shop. The shopkeeper answered immediately.
"Hello, Glenn," he said. "How is our friend, this morning?"
"He is acting a little strangely, actually, sir," Glenn said. He filled the shopkeeper in on Tiny's reaction to Abigail, and his subsequent behaviour.
"Hmmm," said the shopkeeper. "Interesting. Perhaps we are finally breaking him."
"Breaking him, sir? I thought our aim was to try to contain him."
"He is a beast, you know?" the shopkeeper said, suddenly, after a brief pause. "He is not really what you or I should consider human. He is evil."
Glenn took a breath and considered how to reply. He was not sure he believed in the concept of evil, although Tiny was a twisted creature, indeed.
"You know, Glenn," the shopkeeper continued, before Glenn could answer. "Where I grew up the trees were beautiful. Not like the ones in this reality."
Glenn took another deep breath. He had never considered that the shopkeeper may have also arrived from outside this reality. And what that might mean. What might that mean?
"In autumn the colours of the trees were truly spectacularly multicoloured. They lit up in the dark."
"Really, sir," Glenn said, trying to keep his voice neutral. "I don't think I realised that you were-"
"From a different reality, Glenn? Oh, yes."
"Did you know Tiny? There, I mean."
"Oh, I encountered him there. He was not originally from my reality. I met him through one of my doppelgangers - one of my torments as Tiny would say, although I never thought of them as such. I had a good close working relationship with my doppelganger."
