Peace Bridge, Tbilisi City (Georgia)
Background
Three years ago I backpacked throughout Azerbaijan and Georgia in a trip that covered a lot of architectural highlights. Today I want to showcase the Bridge of Peace situated in Tbilisi, Georgia. The bridge has a total length of around 150 meters (490 ft) and crosses the Kura River in downtown Tbilisi. The construction of this bridge was actually quite controversial, with several politicians, architects and urban planners unleashing criticism, complaining that the bridge did not fit into the historical old town and blocked old architectural landmarks. I have to say that although I loved the bridge itself, I can see the arguments of the opposition, but this is also typical for what you see in Central Asia; a great mingle of old and new, with different styles mixing together. Love it or hate it?
