Hi Steemit family!
Transparent wood. A material for the future
For some time now I have been talking about some of the most amazing materials that are changing the course of construction into sustainable, ecological and economic terrains. Today we will discover a material called transparent wood. Please join me in learning more about the benefits of this unique material.
One of the purposes of the construction of this era is the ability to offer materials that without the need for a finish can give an aesthetic appearance pleasing to the eye. This material known as transparent wood and is being replaced by traditional materials such as plastic, glass and even cement itself one of the universal materials in construction by an ecological material with properties to maintain temperature and provide lighting without using electricity.
This type of wood is chemically treated to remove the lignin that provides color and strength to replace biodegradable acrylic that keeps the structure of the wood intact but substantially improving the optical properties. The biodegradable acrylic is mixed with polyethylene glycol to avoid the use of toxic oils or their preparation which means a significant emission of CO2. At present, the definitive replacement of the polymer with one that is 100% biodegradable remains to be resolved.
Among the main advantages of transparent wood is the incredible energy savings because one of its benefits is to maintain the temperature in the interiors, in addition to conserving energy on the outside that can be returned to the interior by spending the day keeping a house warm at night and cool during the day. With it the manufacture of sensors to render, to make flexible and transparent the conductors of electricity.
In scientific terms, transparent wood has. 90 % optical transmittance and its elasticity as a factor exceeds 80% and has a high electrical conductivity (0.16 S m-1). This generates energy accumulation thanks to its high density (approximately 1.2 g/cmc) and low thermal conductivity (0.23 Wm-1 k-1)
Another advantage is that it is lighter than conventional wood and allows assembly at low temperature and has the same strength as wood and similar materials, for its transparency provides light so it is not necessary to have large artificial light installations, even experiments have been made with solar panels and its use indicates that it is a very versatile material and with high probabilities of becoming the material of last generation for the manufacture of solar panels. Other more recent applications are the use of this wood to make LED light diodes, it was also shown that could have more strength if applied in capable than Plexiglas, all in a single material.
If it is observed in a constant way this material could be a serious threat for the industry of the plastic, iron, and glass industries that dominate until the moment the trade of materials for the construction, many companies of engineering and architecture are ready to begin to use this innovative material in order to lower costs in the construction in addition to being solidary with the environment. The problem as I have mentioned in other publications is the resistance of sectors that have more than a century commercializing materials that in turn have been used for centuries, only that the industrial revolutions have made the production so grotesque that it has put at risk the health of the planet.
