Both of my children love tomato sauce with their pasta ๐, preferably without herbs, onions or garlic though we do try and blitz in a few vegetables such as carrots and squashes for variety and nutrition. Of course, they like ketchup too but we try and avoid offering this as it has so many additives.
We love tomato soup, particularly in winter with lots of herbs for a heart warming flavour.
Did you know that in fact a tomato is a fruit but it is commonly used and prepared as a vegetable? ๐
My toddler daughter loves watching the tomatoes growing on the vine. In previous years, she has picked them when they were green and hastily stuffed them in her mouth before we could stop her but this year she has been patiently waiting for them to ripen.
Tomatoes are easy to grow. You can either dry the seeds of your favourite variety and sow them the following spring, buy seeds or grow from a plug. They can be sowed out after the frosts have passed. They need watering frequently and possibly staking when they are large or the fruit will drag onto the ground ๐ฑ.
Tomatoes are a super food nutritionally. They are an excellent source of the anti-oxidant lycopene which has been linked to a reduced risk of cancer and heart disease. They are also a good source of vitamins A (carotine), C and K, potassium, folate and fibre.
Once we have harvested our tomatoes, I shall post an update, ๐
