Today I thought it would be nice to show you a bit of where I live. A small mining town called Kearns.
Don't blink or you'll miss it.
My home town is part of another town called Virginiatown. It takes both towns combined to make a population of about 300 people, in which together makes the McGarry Township.
The town was built in mid 1930's based upon the opening of Kerr-Addison gold mine. Much of the buildings stayed the same but resulted in being torn down if no one owned it. Some houses were renovated as the years went on and some well... It is passed due.
We don't have a lot of services in my town. We have a gas station... A very old and messy gas station.
And we have a restaurant and convenience store within the restaurant. My parents own the restaurant and I help out from time to time as a cook. I enjoy making good food.
The place is no longer called Armando's, that was when the place used to be a bar. My parents never bothered taking it down. It is now called The River Valley Restaurant.
Here they serve mostly fast food like fried chicken, fries and poutines, hamburgers, pizza etc. Mostly because that is what the people want on a daily basis. Gotta go with the demand. We used to make fancier meals but the demand for it decreased. We keep the really good food for special occasions now.
In Virginiatown(which we will now call V-town), we have a fire hall, post office, a clinic, a school that holds about 20 children and in the northern section we have an arena that is basically used for gatherings, events like weddings, meetings and even the Country Jamboree. I did not feel like walking the 2 km distance to take those pictures due to the injury of my ankle, so here are some that I have taken from the http://www.vtownhistory.org/
This is an aerial view of the northern part of Virginiatown(call this one North V-town). Here you can see the water tower that took over our spring water and to the right of that is the arena.
This is another aerial view of the other section of V-town. (North V-town and V-town are not really connected.)
You see the building with the turquoise roof? That used to be where we would hold curling competitions, but this building is no longer there. It was burned down.
You see that big white space at the top of the picture? That is Larder Lake. Probably one of the main reasons why people live here.
This town is big on hunting and fishing , skidooing and 4 wheeling (quads). We are surrounded by forests and lakes which makes this place a tight community.
I end this walk with me with the pictures here of Frankie trying to climb on top of the snow in hopes to get to the trampoline. And this beautiful shot of this pinecone I spotted beside me. I had to put it in black and white, it was just so beautiful that way.
Thanks for reading in on my walk and information on my little town. Enjoy the rest of the day _ xx
