This series will go country by country through my two-year trip. I plan on sharing some experiences, thoughts, and photos of each country that I visited.
Country by Country 15: Portugal
After spending 5 days in Rome, I flew back to my apartment in Germany for a few weeks. I had plans to meet my mom in Portugal so I killed time at home until it was time to get back on the road. We met at Lisbon airport and got a rental car. Our Airbnb was located on the coast, and we found it without too many problems. The area where we stayed (Ericeira) was a cool surfer area that was calm and quiet compared to the city.
We only spent a few days in Portugal before going south to Spain and Morocco. Here are some of my photos from our time in beautiful Portugal.
The view from our Airbnb.
The coast of Portugal.
A cool looking building.
I'm not sure what this little thing is.
The view from inside a museum.
Portugal had some cool ceilings.
A random street view.
We went to Monserrate Palace which is a cool mansion and park that was mostly built in the early 1800's.
Monserrate Palace.
I don't know what you call all of these kinds of decoration, but I loved it. It's like lace covers everything.
A wall and ceiling.
A ceiling.
A dragon fountain in the front yard.
Lisbon itself was a very cool city. It had a fun vibe and looked like the kind of place that I would want to visit without my mom. Even with my mom, we had plenty of fun. We mostly walked around and looked at everything. We also hired a tuk-tuk and did a tour of the city.
A cool arch and clock.
I don't understand this statue. A guy on a horse surrounded by people being trampled by animals. Is this a man vs. nature type of thing?
This guy is getting smashed by a horse. I think I'd prefer to be the guy getting crushed by a baby elephant. "Crushed by a baby elephant" sounds cooler than "crushed by a horse".
I couldn't tell if a special event was happening here or if this is just where a restaurant puts its tables.
Lisbon
In Lisbon, we also went to one of the creepiest churches in Europe. Everything is decorated with baby dolls and body parts. It's weird.
Here is a display of dead lady parts. See the hands with little windows? That's so you can see the rotting flesh. I think the skulls are inside those creepy mannequins as well.
Hear are a bunch of dead men parts. Hands seem to be pretty popular with whoever's in charge of chopping up corpses. I wonder what these poor folks did to deserve this kind of treatment in death.
Hundreds of baby doll heads in a building full of body parts. It's like I'm in an episode of Dexter or True Detective or something.
Enough with the doll heads, guys. This is getting out of hand.
The church was actually pretty cool to check out. I talk a lot of shit, but I don't hate the church or churchgoers. I do think it's bat-shit crazy to display human body parts, but I realize that some people are into that sort of thing. Life would be boring if there wasn't weird stuff like this in it.
After a few days in Portugal, my mom and I dropped off our rental car and took a bus to Spain. Since I've already done a post about Spain, I won't be making a second one. Instead, my next post will be about Morocco where we went to from Spain.
