"It can't be,not again", one young man exclaimed and his friend replied and said "it seems all they do is collect money in church these days".
The short story above is a typical conversation among some brethrens when the topic of giving is been raised in the church or towards charity. Raising topics about giving causes suspicion among brethren questioning the integrity of the Preacher. In today's world, we see so much corruption about giving in churches today which makes it difficult for Christian to different between true and fraudulent acts of donations. We are definitely in need of comprehensive, uncompromised instructions about the issue of giving to reveal the blessing and grace behind giving.
In the words of Richard Plache,
......They(mass media) emphasize that obedience to God's financial laws is essential for our spiritual welfare, and don't omit to mention of the fact that their financial survival will be jeopardized if we don't send them donations to pay their bills!
Perhaps in the end we begrudgingly respond because we feel guilt as a result of some trip that has been subtly laid on us.
In Paul's letter to the people of Corinthians, Apostle Paul explained the grace of God accompanied in Giving in the church.
Grace in Giving
As christians, we give because we have and we have because God provided for us. The fact that we have is by the grace of God. God is love and we can express love in giving to others which is the manifestation of the expression of our love. Giving should not be based on merit but to please God. Ever wondered how we merit God's blessings? The blessings of God are earned through the grace of God. Giving causes God to act, just like the story of the widow with oil and Elisha. It was her benevolence towards the prophet that made her receive her miracle. Moreso, giving should not be made out of our means that is we should give to the extent we can afford.
2 Corinthians 8:3
For, as I can bear witness, [they gave] according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability; and [they did it] voluntarily.
