I doubt that they actually do accept BTC as payment because that would be a rather difficult process for something that just costs a dollar or so. Who knows, I suppose it is possible.
The real issue that this place would face as far as accepting any crypto as payment is that while crypto does have wide adoption for investment purposes in Vietnam, the government still doesn't allow it to be used as a method of payment for any goods or services and you can get in a lot of trouble for screwing around with the Vietnamese government for doing so.
Unlike other coffee shops in Da Nang, all 11 million of them, this one was closing up shop really early so when I got there I didn't even get a chance to sample the wares. I want to support businesses that have forward thinking in something that is important to me like crypto, so I will have to return to this place at a later date.
it looks like the dropped some money on this place and it is strange because it is kind of far away from anywhere else and certainly far away from tourist areas. I just randomly stumbled upon its existence when I was talking to a guy here that organizes crypto meetups. There was a time that he organized Hive meetups but then something happened and he got bullied into ditching the platform. I'm not going to get into that because I don't want to ruffle any feathers and I don't know the details of it anyway.
Getting back to how you really shouldn't screw around with the government as far as financial laws are concerned: While the Vietnamese authorities are pretty lenient as far as most offenses are concerned, they are very strict about financial rules. I am just pleased that I think it was this year, that they passed laws or regulations that made it perfectly legal for anyone to invest in crypto. Previously, it was illegal across the board and you had to be very secretive about getting involved in it. To this day many exchanges are still blocked to people that don't know how to use VPN's and are located in this country, and many exchanges will not have anything to do with you if you are Vietnamese and the exchange has KYC.
There is a story about how some very wealthy person stole or embezzled a bunch of money from the Vietnamese government and they thought that they could buy their way out of it. Instead, the Vietnamese government sentence the person to death. They didn't actually follow through on this but this decision to pass the death sentence along convince the billionaire that they meant serious business and that they couldn't buy their way out of this one. Now they are fully complying with the government and the sentence was commuted to life sentence. I'm not making this up, you can read about it here
Crypto had nothing to do with that particular case, but it is just an example of how the authorities around here don't screw around when it comes to financial "crimes" and for ages Crypto was seen as something that was only used for illicit purposes.
Now things are changing though and the government realizes that the future is crypto, whether they like it or not and they can either embrace it, or fight a losing battle against it.
I like that there are some businesses here that are getting ahead of the curve and promoting its use even if they can't technically accept it as payment....yet.
At the moment there are only a handful of "Crypto-Friendly" establishments in the city of Da Nang, but I expect as interest grows in the industry, that we will start to see more and more of them. It would be nice if payments were legal using crypto because at the moment there are places that accept it, but will only do so if you are a regular there and they are sure you aren't a narc. Mostly I think it would be more wise for these places to not even attempt to do point of sale using crypto at the moment because if someone does so and gets busted, it is going to upset the government and they may just revert to banning it outright again.
