A chelo, some drumsticks, and an electric guitar? This so had the vide of School of Rock. I hardly pick content on Netflix to watch without any kind of information or previous reference, but this movie felt right, and right it was. Metal Lords is a funny, music-based, coming-of-age movie set on a high school ambiance. The main question is why these nerds end up being the Lords of metal music. In this post, I present my impressions of the movie, and who knows, maybe you'll like too.

Difícilmente elijo contenido en Netflix para ver sin ningún tipo de información o referencia previa, pero esta película se sintió bien, y así fue. Metal Lords es una película divertida, basada en la música, sobre la mayoría de edad ambientada en un ambiente de escuela secundaria. La pregunta principal es por qué estos nerds terminan siendo los Señores de la música metal. En este post les presento mis impresiones de la película, y quién sabe, quizás a ustedes también les guste.
There is no older concept in American high school than being cool by playing on a band. I mean all teens just want to be popular, and music is one path to achieve it. That search for popularity and status is indeed a concept that always entertains. Added to that, we have nerds and misfits. So, the transitioning from nerd to something else while still being a nerd somehow is the kind of transformative element that adds to the fun and connects with the audience.
No hay un concepto más antiguo en la escuela secundaria estadounidense que ser genial tocando en una banda. Me refiero a que todos los adolescentes solo quieren ser populares, y la música es un camino para lograrlo. Esa búsqueda de popularidad y estatus es en efecto un concepto que siempre entretiene. Sumado a eso, tenemos nerds e inadaptados. Entonces, la transición de nerd a otra cosa sin dejar de ser un nerd de alguna manera es el tipo de elemento transformador que se suma a la diversión y conecta con la audiencia.
These two concepts join together to present us the story of Kevin, a teenager part of the school's march band who plays a drum, diving into and experiencing metal music. AS a result his life and himself change because of it. This musical path is lived alongside Kevin's bestfriend Hunter, a misfit rich kid of divorced parents who treats Metal music as a religion. His complete metal advocating and worshipping introduces Kevin to that world as a Jehovah Witness would teach you about his God. The duet face a lot of challenges, and on the road they meet a Chelo player girl, new at school, with some attitude problems who has a certain metal attitude. Together they navigate their way into becoming a true metal band.
Estos dos conceptos se unen para presentarnos la historia de Kevin, un adolescente parte de la banda de marcha de la escuela que toca un tambor, sumergiéndose y experimentando la música metal. Como resultado, su vida y él mismo cambian a causa de ello. Este camino musical se vive junto al mejor amigo de Kevin, Hunter, un niño rico inadaptado de padres divorciados que trata la música Metal como una religión. Su completa defensa y adoración del metal introduce a Kevin a ese mundo como un testigo de Jehová que le enseñaría acerca de su Dios. El dúo enfrenta muchos desafíos, y en el camino se encuentran con una chica jugadora de Chelo, nueva en la escuela, con algunos problemas de actitud que tiene cierta actitud de metal. Juntos navegan su camino para convertirse en una verdadera banda de metal.
Kevin is the typical introvert that flourishes, and what I liked the most is that he remains a good guy despise bad choices being presented to him throughout the movie. In a classical storyline, the good guy always makes a huge mistakes and revendicates at the end. Here, Kevin stays good in front of difficult choices. Another interesting aspect is how similar Hunter looks to DJ Qualls, and actor quite known by the movie "The New Guy." Actually, the vibes of Hunter and Dizzy from that movie is quite similar in my opinion. Hunter has great scenes and he is just so passionate about heavy metal, but my favorite part is when he presents himself in front of a security guard. I laughed for a quite a while haha.
Kevin es el típico introvertido que florece, y lo que más me gustó es que sigue siendo un buen tipo a pesar de las malas decisiones que se le presentan a lo largo de la película. En una historia clásica, el chico bueno siempre comete grandes errores y se venga al final. Aquí, Kevin se mantiene bien frente a decisiones difíciles. Otro aspecto interesante es lo parecido que se ve Hunter con DJ Qualls, y actor bastante conocido por la película "The New Guy". En realidad, las vibraciones de Hunter y Dizzy de esa película son bastante similares en mi opinión. Hunter tiene escenas geniales y le apasiona el heavy metal, pero mi parte favorita es cuando se presenta frente a un guardia de seguridad. Me reí un buen rato jaja.
Emily is the last component of this trio. She is a misfit and has a difficult condition dealing with anxiety everyday. That made her develop a very aggressive side which Kevin recognizes as how true metal is all about. I love she plays the Chelo and how that combined with metal music. Classical instruments can be badass too, and she proves it in this movie. She also brings the sweetness to the story, and a little bit of drama since, in words of Hunter, she is the Yoko Ono of their band.
Emily es el último componente de este trío. Ella es una inadaptada y tiene una condición difícil para lidiar con la ansiedad todos los días. Eso la hizo desarrollar un lado muy agresivo que Kevin reconoce como el verdadero metal. Me encanta que toque el Chelo y cómo lo combina con la música metal. Los instrumentos clásicos también pueden ser geniales, y ella lo demuestra en esta película. Ella también aporta dulzura a la historia y un poco de drama ya que, en palabras de Hunter, ella es la Yoko Ono de su banda.
The movie didn't scape critiques as it is related to a music genre. Most of them were around being not metal enough, just enough, or more than enough. As you can see, the public is hard to please. I incline my opinion towards the "not metal enough" to be called metal lords, but the construction of the movie includes powerful scenes related to the music genre, and I enjoyed them. Its score was around 60%, but I still recommend it. I had a good time, and them movie kept my attention which not many stories do in present time.
Overall, Metal Lords has a decent amount of metal music, a classic transformation storyline, cute and funny scenes, many jokes along the road, typical teenage drama, and a super weird finale. You can fall from one, two, or all the main characters. There is just one piece for everybody which we can identify with. I do recommend it, I enjoyed it completely, and is so worth watching. Give it a try!
La película no escapó a las críticas por estar relacionada con un género musical. La mayoría de ellos no eran lo suficientemente metálicos, lo suficiente o más que suficiente. Como puede ver, el público es difícil de complacer. Inclino mi opinión hacia el "no lo suficientemente metal" para ser llamados señores del metal, pero la construcción de la película incluye escenas poderosas relacionadas con el género musical, y las disfruté. Su puntuación rondaba el 60%, pero aún así lo recomiendo. La pasé bien, y la película mantuvo mi atención, cosa que no sucede con muchas historias en la actualidad.
En general, Metal Lords tiene una cantidad decente de música metal, una historia de transformación clásica, escenas lindas y divertidas, muchas bromas en el camino, el típico drama adolescente y un final súper extraño. Puedes caer de uno, dos o todos los personajes principales. Solo hay una pieza para todos con la que podemos identificarnos. Lo recomiendo, lo disfruté completamente, y vale la pena verlo. ¡Dale una oportunidad!
