City of Ghosts is a handcut collage series inspired by my hometown Thessaloniki. It was founded in 315 BC by Cassander of Macedon. An important metropolis by the Roman period, Thessaloniki was the second largest and wealthiest city of the Byzantine Empire. It was conquered by the Ottomans in 1430, and passed from the Ottoman Empire to Greece on November 8, 1912. Ever since it became a multicultural city where Jewish Ottoman Franks and Greeks lived in harmony. You can still see the marks of these different cultures like ghosts from far past in a modern city.
This feeling i tried to recreate in this collage series. All of the photos are taken from the city's archive and are from the 20's 30's and 40's era and the size of the artworks is 50/35cm.
