That Jesus died on the cross of cavalry is known to us, what I want to say in this lesson is the connection between us and His death.
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come. But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! - Romans 5:12-15
When Adam sinned in the garden of Eden, death entered into the world through him, since then man began to die because Adam the representatives of humanity died. It passed from him to all mankind. When Adam was in the garden we were all in him because everyone that will be born is from him.
The Bible calls Jesus the second Adam. When therefore, Jesus was crucified He represented all humanity that will believe in Him. Therefore all those who will believe in him equally died in the cross with him as His body died so we also died in Him. That means we died in sin with Him.
The implication of the death is that as Jesus died for sin and rose up in righteousness, so we must account ourselves dead to sin. We must reckon it that we are the offspring of Christ, we too died to sin, and we cannot sin again.
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices. - Colossians 3:5-9.
We kill the body of sin because we died with Him. As we rise with Him in resurrection we also shine forth the righteousness of God.
