Hello everyone.
Today I will write to you about a city very important for Serbian history. The city is Corfu and it is located on the island of the same name.
It got its name from the high ridges.
Why is Corfu important for the history of the Serbs?
During World War I, when the army no longer had the strength to fight, the Serbian army and refugees were forced to withdraw from Serbia. They left in October, on foot over the mountains of Montenegro and Albania, and in January they arrived on the Greek island of Corfu. Many of them did not survive the hunger, winter, hiking, and according to historians' estimates, around 150,000 soldiers and civilians from Serbia arrived on Corfu. The King of Serbia, King Petar and his son Aleksandar Karađorđević also crossed Albania with the soldiers.
The saddest, but solemn and dignified song "Far away there" was written on Corfu, which was one of the 3 proposals for the national anthem of Serbia. Many came to Corfu and spent months recuperating and being treated, and the most seriously wounded and sick were transferred by ship to the neighboring island of Vido. Unfortunately, many died on ships and were buried by throwing them into the sea. That island and the road from Corfu to Vid, is called the "Blue Tomb." Milutin Bojić, a young Serbian poet, wrote a poem with the same name.
People who were slightly injured, with minor frostbite and wounds, after a long month of recovery, were transferred to the city of Thessaloniki. From Thessaloniki, they crossed Macedonia again to Serbia in French ships and won a victory over the enemy.
For me, Corfu is a beautiful city and somehow I felt grateful to the city itself, the whole time we stayed there. It is located on the coast of the Ionian Sea.
The town is magical. Buildings both old and new attract attention. Many stairs, narrow streets, like in every city that is on the coast. I enjoyed walking, sightseeing, the sea, fresh and clean air.
The city is rich in many cultural and historical monuments, museums, promenades and has its own port.
It also has two fortresses and the old town, as part of the city. Corfu is the capital of the island of Corfu, so its location and beauty make it one of the many tourist attractions of Greece. Hotels, taverns, rooms for rent, a beautiful beach, a golf course offer great enjoyment to tourists.
Corfu is really worth visiting and if you are planning a vacation somewhere, I highly recommend Greece, especially Corfu.
