On Tuesday morning I was up at 5:30AM and got a load in the dishwasher. Then I my post up. I sat for a little while and then got up to tend seedlings. I moved all the big ones to the dining room table then checked to see what had come up. The bell peppers were finally up and couple Kapijas. Some of the flowers had come up, like snapdragons.
Once every tray was finished, I started feeding the inside seedlings who needed it and then watered the rest.
By then my helper friend had arrived at 10:30AM and he started carrying trays to the cold frame. I went out to level trays and realized I needed liquid to do it. So we dragged out the hoses and amendments and mixed up liquid drench. I leveled the 9 trays that went out and then he finished filling them while I finished feeding the inside seedlings.
I decided to take the plastic off the cold frame and we got it on the clothesline to dry out. But it kept blowing off, even with clothespins and I finally just pulled it off and put it in the alcove after he’d left.
I have a seed starting of 9 trays on Saturday and it’s tomatoes and melons so I left spaces for them in the roundtop window.
I started making lunch around noon and the phone rang. It was an aspiring farmer of sheep interested in leasing the property. We talked so long on the phone, I forgot my lunch and nearly burned it down.
My helper had done some chores while I was on the phone, and then left for errands. The farmer decided to come out to see the farm around 3PM. So I sat down to rest until he came.
I got up at 3PM and went out and deadheaded daffodils until he arrives. I showed him the farm and the barn and we talked for nearly 3 hours. I don’t know if what he wants to do here will fit, as he will definitely need guardian dogs and I really don’t want to be awakened by barking dogs in the night.
But it was fascinating to hear about how he came to be starting to do this type of farming and what he hoped to accomplish.
My son had started unloading the truck of the kindling and got 5 bags into the cellar before he left. There’s a whole lot more to do.
Once the farmer left, I made supper and lay down to watch ‘Leave It to Beaver’ until bedtime. My #2 intern arrived to cook supper for my #1 intern. She had started back at a second job doing carpentry sorts of things part time. The first day had worn her out.
On Wednesday I have to finish feeding the house plants and get laundry going. Then I hope to finish cleaning up the white lilac, the spirea, and the new West garden. That will take care of all the gardens except the 3 on the north side of the house. I have to get a tarp back on the truck as it’s to rain all day Thursday.
