On Friday I had a lot of stuff to get done. I’d already set up the seeds left to start, so I found the 6 trays we needed and got the dirt knocked out of them so they were ready for washing. My general helper would do that when she arrived at 8AM.
Then I went out and emptied out the garden shed so my helper friend could reach the cold frame covers.
They were buried in the far left corner. He got them out and on the cold frames and I got them tied down so the wind wouldn’t take them.
When we went to put the stuff back, my helper friend suggested getting the pea fences out now, while we had room. So I went and found the garden plan to see what lengths we needed.
Turns out they were 18’ and one was 24’. Most of my fences are 30’ and I didn’t want to cut them. So we took out one 30’ for the 24’ length and all the smaller sizes to piece together for the 18’ lengths. Then we put all the stuff back in the shed neatly. It won’t stay that way, but it’s nice while it lasts.
My general helper almost had all the trays washed by the time we finished this. So I started filling them with pots.
The last thing I did before my helpers arrived was get all the window screens ready to come upstairs. My helper friend did that next after the cold frame.
My general helper had brought the newspaper and I sat for a while looking to see if there were tag sales. She said she couldn’t do them on Saturday, so I called another friend. Turns out she was busy too. So no tag sales this weekend.
Next to the back steps the bloodroot had a lot of buds. Later in the morning when it got hot, they opened, along with the bright yellow lesser celandine. But by then I was too tired to find the camera.
My general helper and I worked on the screens after we’d gotten the kitchen cleaned up. My helper friend got the floor vacuumed and washed. That seed starting mix has dried out and is really dusty now.
There are about 40 screens to wash. My brother wants to get at least the screen doors installed this weekend. I also should get two of the west windows washed and screens in on the second floor. I found out that I was only allotted 6 hrs per year for window cleaning after years of 24 hours per year. There are 43 windows to do twice a year in this passive solar heated house.
I had tossed all the old fence posts into the alcove of the woodshed when I’d cleaned behind the sheds. My helper friend went out and took the porcelain insulators off the posts, tossed the rotten ones over the bank, and stacked the good ones.
But he left the wire for me to untangle and coil neatly. One day….
My helper friend also got all the house plants watered before he had to leave.
Once my general helper and I got all the screens washed and inside to dry, we got the lights and heat mat set up in the office. Then we left to do shopping and errands.
She left when we got back and I got the food put away and went to bed. I slept about 2½ hours.
On Saturday my brother and I plan to go to the dump and then see about getting a few windows washed and screens in on the second floor. Once we get that done, he may go out and cut up the downed tree in the middle pasture. It’s to rain in the afternoon.
