This movie is considerably darker than the average Pixar movie (this movie is not made by Pixar by the way) and appeals to an older audience. The film is entirely computer animated and features the voices of Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connely, and others.
After a brief explanation as to how the world ended up in this state because of (yet again) technology gaining the upper hand on humanity after people ventured too far into A.I., we are introduced to "9" who is one of a number of small stitched together "dolls" who, as it is explained in the intro, have a soul.
The world is a pretty desolate place now as all life, plant and animal, has been destroyed by computer robots with no soul. 9 and the other "stitchpunks" are not terribly aware of their importance to the planet until much later and well, I'll let you find out what that purpose is on your own.
I will admit that this movie is not for everyone. If you don't like sci-fi or animated films, there is a good chance you will not enjoy this movie. However, even if you are on the fence about whether or not you like animated sci-fi films, perhaps you appreciate the stylings of Tim Burton - who did not direct the movie but was one of the producers and part of the creative process.
I thought this was a very inventive look at the apocalypse and appreciate a little more grown up animation sometimes. The story of course is familiar seeing as how there are already so many apocalypse films out there. This however, to me, while not spectacular, is worth seeing especially if you like animated films. I suppose it could be considered a bit boring to people that don't appreciate the genre.
