Since I am visiting people that live here I asked them to to take me to a place that tourists don't normally eat at. This is because i want to see how the locals eat and also (I didn't tell them this and they don't know I write here) the tourist food places, for the most part, are pretty average.
So we went to Saboneta to some random cafeteria that as far as i could tell didn't have a name. Perfect!
I do NOT have an image of what this place looked like from the street because that would be a fantastic method of getting run over. The streets were very narrow and traffic was insane because this road is the only highway on the north cost.
They had a bunch of pre-made curries (I guess) and coming from Thailand, i am not at all afraid of something being too spicy since I am convinced the Thais are trying to kill any visitors with chilis. However, by my friends' recommendation i went for what they told me is a "staple" of a Dominican's diet: Chicken with rice and beans.
It seems so simple but there is something about the way they fry the chicken and the seasonings on the beans. At first i was spooning the beans on little by little like a Thai curry but was told to just dump it all on there. I gotta say, for something so simple, this meal is actually really nice, filling, and cheap. What more could a growing boy in his 40's ask for?
I ate all of mine and the side salad, finished my passion-fruit juice and then paid my bill of $4. I have been told that this is a rather fancy rice and beans place that we went to. I likely will not go back because my goodness was it loud in there but i gotta say... for something that sounds so simple like "rice and beans" that was just awesome!
