While i don't necessarily think it is Sandler's fault, this movie is just bad - and when i say bad i mean it isn't funny.
This just seems like the usual Sandler charity benefit for all his pals who can't seem to pull of movies on their own. Sandler doesn't need them in order to make money but as is typical he is always injecting the usual suspects as his co stars. I guess that is pretty awesome for him as a pal, but that doesn't mean that the film is going to be any good.
I realize that this is an adult "coming of age" type movie which probably reflects how Sandler and his buddies (and really anyone who goes through mid-life) feel when we see ourselves transition and reluctantly must grow up.
A lot of the jokes are what would be described as toilet humor, and i'm not gonna say that Sandler definitely shouldn't do that, because it is kind of a big part of what makes him who he is. The script is pretty dumb and most of the jokes aren't funny.
Regardless of how I feel about it - or essentially anyone else in the professional critic world feels, this film made over 200 million dollars and I can't help but just shake my head in disbelief that this is possible. As i have said many times before, all of Sandler's movies, including the abhorrent Jack and Jill make tens to hundreds of millions of dollars and his attempts at any other formula (which are far better movies) routinely make very little or actually lose money.
I would consider this one of the largest flops in the comedy genre when you consider the star power that it contained. I will give a few points because there are occasional chuckle moments and I dig David Spade. However, that's about all i can do.
