As strong as this series started out and as much as I loved it I finally made it through all 10 episodes and I am a little sad to be saying this but my final choice after watching all 10 episodes is that the show is not special nor is it something that I can say anyone needs to watch.
This is really disappointing to me because it started out so strong. You may recall that I gave it 9 / 10 based on the first 3 episodes but then the whole thing just started to unravel and to be honest, after the entire thing is over, and I have had a chance to digest what happened (it is convoluted mess at times - the story) I can say with full confidence that you don't need to watch this series.
It started out with some genuine scares (mostly dread but a few jump scares) and a genuinely intriguing story. However, as the episodes drug on (and they really started to drag because they were boring and without substance) the scares were gone and it became more a WTF? mystery of what the hell is going on?
Then the family started arguing all the time and when all the pieces come together in the finale we are not wowed, we are just left in a position of "really?" all this time that was it? To be honest it is bit dumb. They try to pull at your heartstrings with some touching music that is going on but at that point me and my friends were just kind of over it.
The worst part about the series after episodes 1-5 was that it almost entirely stopped being scary. The whole reason behind this thing was horror right?
we needed more of this but i think they ran out of it about 5 episodes in
There was a late introduction of 2 new ghost characters that didn't have much to do with the rest of the story and i think that might have happened because of the lack of scares. I don't know how this can possibly get a second season since the conclusion seems to be exactly that... but well, if it made money and I still don't know how they gauge that on Netflix, i would imagine they will make another.
In case you were keeping score here is how my running tally went throughout reviewing the entire series piece-by-piece
Phase 1: 9 / 10 (stunning, edge of your seat start)
Phase 2: 7 / 10 (slight slow down compared to beginning)
Phase 3: 3 / 10 (this is episodes 6 and 7 which are just awful)
Phase 4: 6 / 10 (slight redemption but still not as good as the start
Phase 5: 4 / 10 (the culmination of events is either predictable or "meh")
Overall score for The Haunting of Hill House's first season
