As many of you may know, I live in a tropical country and am now in the process of visiting another one. I am in the Dominican Republic where some people I know live for part of the year.
that's the flag by the way, if you are a visual learner
One thing I have noticed about this country compared to the one that I live in (Thailand) is that I have accidentally been lying for many years. I have suggested that the climates are exactly the same between the two and that is not true at all. Thailand is significantly hotter and more humid than the D.R..
There is one thing that is the same though and that is that the service industry, such as getting a haircut is significantly cheaper than what we have grown accustomed to in the west such as North America and most of Europe.
I settled on Los Muchachos because it was recommended and well, it has an awesome name.
I don't speak very much Spanish, and the barber doesn't speak much English, fortunately my desired haircut is an easy one so there really isn't much to be said. Occasionally he would say something to me but i would give him a confused look and well, we just decided to not talk during the hair cut... haha. It's ok, he had some nice music playing and he did a good job cutting hair and was quick about it.
The total price for all of this if $4 and I have been told that locals only pay $2-3 but man, i am not going to haggle someone who is clearly poor over a dollar or two. He was a nice guy and I think he was saying that his son plays for the Angels baseball team in the states (baseball is very popular here.)
If you find yourself in the Cabarete area (or really anywhere else in the D.R.) you can get a haircut as cheap as I did pretty much anywhere. Expect to pay between $4-6 USD for a cut and maybe a shave. Mine was opposite the beach, which wasn't the best looking beach but still, how many people have a barber shop on a tropical beachfront that charges less than $5? This country truly is a budget paradise.
