Just wrote this little thing while hanging out at my friend's.
I was challenging myself to write it in under 40 minutes, which I basically did haha. Kind of fun to give yourself a deadline and see what comes of it. This turned out decent, I really like the tone the drums have, they came out nice... although I haven't listened with my nice headphones, so I may be updating this post later with the new version, lol.
I started with the drums, and just made a really simple beat.
Kick Snare Kick Snare, with some ride on top. I then just sort of filled it in with a shaker and some side-snare hits, hich keeps the beat moving and gives it a sense of crescendo. There are two little fills with the heavy high hat hits on the quarter beats, which just helped to break up the whole thing.
Instrument wise, I tried to incorporate panning between the tracks.
After the second build, you can hear the sort of reggae keyboard on the upbeats, and after that a low, trumpet sort of sample filling in the second half of the measure. You can also hear the high little melody that builds up at the end of each set of 4 measures. It leads into the heavy hi hat breakdown sot of part, which also uses that instrument (more than anywhere else in the track). We also have a bass tone, playing the same rhythm as the electric-marimba sort of sounding instrument. Triplets at the beginning of each measure, the bass just playing the root of each arpeggio the marimba plays. There is also a little water drop sound heard every 2 measures, just thought it was fun to have that going the whole track, but allow other instruments to build up and make it temporarily disappear.
I've been focusing more on tone than structurelately,
so while I don't consider these my best songs by any stretch of the imagination, I am happy with how much I've learned about mixing and blending electronic instruments. Steemit has really inspired me to keep pushing forward and getting better at things I've sort of ignored in the past.
