The Hauptfriedhof, or main cemetery was on my route back to my hotel. It would have been very rude of me not to have popped in and have a wander. Would it not?
The Graveyard was consecrated in 1820, and is now the third largest forest cemetery in Germany. It sits on a steep slope, and the graves are on terracing amongst the trees.
A little bit of googling and it seems this young girl was credited as part of the team that produced the Gran Turismo games for the playstation
and on the reverse.....
.....looks more like the closing credits to star wars, how some folk want to make themselves the centre of attention, it just pisses me off to be honest. I mean "data capturing team"
Why?
The memorial to the Maring Family, in the centre Albert, a Jesuit priest who was very vocal against the Nazi party, the Gestapo arrested him in Lübeck for "anti-state activities". He died in Dachau concentration camp.
Standing in front of another family memorial a semi-circle of names and dates of birth and death entitled. "The Unknown"
Rudolf Sr. seems to have been at one time Mayor of the town and Rudolf Jr. died on the 27th Jan 1944 in Russia. On that exact date the Russian forces eventually relieved the siege of Leningrad.
"Life goes, love stays"
Monument to priests of the Jesuit movement, the sect actually vacated Koblenz in 2003.
Ladies
The family plot of, Dr. Rudolf Freiherr von Bonninghaussen, a minor local politician and administrator.
"In the cross is salvation"
Another rather grand family plot, first used 1870, last used 2011. probably still room for a few more.
Monument to the Pastors of the Parish of St. Joseph, a catholic church in Koblenz.
Napolienstein, a monument constructed in 1843, to commemorate the German soldiers who fought for the french army during the Napoleonic wars. It is a protected National Monument and is part of the UNESCO Upper Rhine valley Heritage Site
A little one sleeps
So an enjoyable wander through part of this ancient graveyard, some folk of "distinction" some unknown, but all in all some gorgeous monuments. I hope this was of interest to you fellow tombstone tourists.
